Sealer for toxic off-gassing of porous surfaces
Safe Seal is particularly effective at sealing in formaldehyde and other VOCs from composite wood such as plywood, particleboard, and pressed wood. Safe Seal will not block emissions of organic odors like smoke or pet smells. It's a water-based, low-gloss sealer for highly porous surfaces - mainly on surfaces that are behind the scenes, i.e. not seen or touched, as it can remain slightly tacky after drying. If the MDF or pressed wood has a veneer/skin of melamine or any non-porous surface, Safe Seal should not be applied to that surface. It should be applied only to the exposed edges where raw MDF or particleboard/pressed wood is visible.
NOTE: Safe Seal is not a finish sealer - for furniture and other touchable surfaces refer to AFM Hard Seal, or AFM Acrylacq, for flooring AFM Polyureseal BP. Safe Seal does NOT create a hard finish but is slightly rubbery.
Safe Seal was AFM Safecoat's flagship product that started the company in the mid '70s. It is one of their best selling products because it works quickly to reduce VOC emissions. Two coats are recommended. This product can be sprayed with a garden type pump sprayer, brush, or roller.
